Facial pain can be frustrating, confusing, and hard to pin down. Some people feel aching near the jaw joints. Others notice soreness in the cheeks, temples, or around the ears. For some, the pain comes and goes. For others, it builds over time and starts affecting eating, talking, sleeping, and daily comfort.
At John H. Kim, DDS in Irvine, we focus on helping patients understand where facial pain is coming from and whether jaw dysfunction may be part of the problem. Our practice is limited to orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine, with a strong focus on TMJ, jaw pain, and related conditions. The goal is not to guess. The goal is to evaluate the joints, muscles, bite, and overall symptom pattern carefully so treatment is based on what is actually happening.

Why Facial Pain Is Not Always Simple
Pain in the face is not always coming from the same place where you feel it. Jaw joints, chewing muscles, and surrounding tissues can all contribute to pain that spreads into the cheeks, temples, around the ears, or other areas of the face. In TMJ-related conditions, patients may also notice clicking, popping, jaw tightness, limited opening, headaches, ear symptoms, or soreness with chewing. The anatomy and nerve connections in this region are complex, which is one reason facial pain is often misunderstood or mislabeled.
That is why a focused evaluation matters. Instead of assuming all facial pain is “just stress” or “just grinding,” we look at the full picture. We want to understand your symptoms, your history, your jaw function, and whether the pain pattern points to joint dysfunction, muscle tension, clenching, bruxism, or another TMJ-related issue.

Signs Your Facial Pain May Be Jaw Related
Facial pain can have many causes, but there are patterns that often point toward the jaw joints and muscles. You may be dealing with a TMJ-related issue if your pain is associated with:
Pain near the jaw joints or in the cheeks
Tenderness in the jaw muscles
Pain that gets worse with chewing or jaw movement
Clicking, popping, or catching in the jaw

Jaw tightness or limited opening
Headaches, temple pain, or ear discomfort that seem connected to jaw tension
Clenching or grinding, especially during sleep or stress
TMJ-related pain can also overlap with ear fullness, ringing, temple discomfort, and muscle soreness in nearby areas. That does not mean every facial pain problem is TMJ, but it does mean the jaw should be evaluated carefully when these symptoms occur together.

How We Evaluate Facial Pain
A proper diagnosis starts with listening. During your visit, we begin with a thorough explanation of your concerns and symptoms. We review your history, ask follow-up questions, and perform a clinical examination of the teeth, mouth, jaw, and temporomandibular joints. We also screen for dental issues with a panoramic x-ray and typically take digital scans as part of the records. If needed, Dr. Kim may recommend a cone beam CT to better visualize the jaw joints, and those images can be sent to a board-certified radiologist for a TMJ-specific report.
This process matters because facial pain is not something that should be treated blindly. Some pain is primarily muscle-related. Some is more joint-related. Some cases involve clenching and bruxism. Some patients have overlapping symptoms that require a more complete diagnostic approach before deciding on treatment.

Treatment for Facial Pain Depends on the Cause
Not all facial pain should be treated the same way. Once Dr. Kim identifies the likely source of your symptoms, treatment is recommended based on your diagnosis and response. Our office offers a range of conservative and advanced options that may be used alone or in combination depending on the case. These include:
The point is not to push every treatment. The point is to match treatment to the problem.
For example, a patient with heavy jaw muscle tension may need a different approach than someone whose pain is coming more directly from the joint. A patient with ongoing clenching may benefit from a different plan than someone whose symptoms are tied to limited opening or joint inflammation. That is why diagnosis comes first.

Why Patients Seek a Focused TMJ Evaluation
Many patients with facial pain have already tried to wait it out, changed how they chew, or assumed the symptoms would pass. Others have been told different things by different providers. That is common with jaw-related pain because these problems can overlap with headaches, ear symptoms, muscle tension, and bite issues.
A focused evaluation gives you a clearer starting point. It helps answer the questions that matter:
At our Irvine specialty practice, the priority is to provide personalized care for people seeking help with TMJ, jaw pain, orofacial pain, and related symptoms. The next step is a consultation so we can determine whether your facial pain may be connected to TMJ dysfunction and what options are appropriate for you.
Schedule a Consultation for Facial Pain in Irvine
If you are dealing with ongoing facial pain, do not assume you have to keep managing around it. Pain in the face, jaw, temples, or surrounding areas may be connected to TMJ dysfunction, jaw muscle tension, or clenching patterns that can be evaluated in a focused way.
At John H. Kim, DDS, we take the time to understand your symptoms, examine the jaw carefully, and recommend treatment based on your diagnosis. If jaw problems may be contributing to your facial pain, scheduling a consultation is the right place to start.
No. Treatment depends on the diagnosis, symptoms, and how the jaw joints and muscles are functioning. Options may include imaging, orthotic therapy, PRF, trigger point injections, Botox, behavioral therapy, and jaw stretching exercises.
Not always. A panoramic x-ray may be used to screen for dental issues, and CBCT imaging may be recommended when a better view of the jaw joints is needed. CBCT images are sent to a board-certified radiologist for a report specific to the TMJ.
PRF stands for Platelet Rich Fibrin. In our office, it is used as a regenerative medicine option to help provide the body optimal conditions to reduce pain, improve function, and support healing.
They can be. Guided behavioral therapy and jaw stretching exercises are part of the services we offer, and red light or shockwave therapy may be used as needed in selected cases.
The goal is to identify the reason for your symptoms, explain your options clearly, and move toward better comfort and function with a plan tailored to your needs.
