If you are dealing with jaw pain, facial tension, clicking, limited opening, headaches, or other symptoms that may be related to TMJ disorder, it is normal to feel unsure about what the first appointment will involve.
At John H. Kim, DDS in Irvine, our first TMJ visit is designed to help us understand your symptoms, examine your jaw joint carefully, and explain your options clearly. Our practice is focused on orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine, so your visit is centered on the specific issues affecting your jaw, muscles, bite, and overall comfort.
The goal of this first visit is simple: understand what is going on, explain what we find, and help you decide on the next step.

Before You Come In
Your first TMJ visit usually starts before you arrive at the office.
You will typically have a discovery call with our front desk team. During that conversation, we ask about your concerns and symptoms, explain our treatment philosophy, and discuss costs of therapy. We will also send your intake forms by email along with directions to the office, and we will confirm your appointment a couple of days beforehand.
This early step helps make the in-office visit more efficient and more focused on you.
If you have already had prior treatment, scans, or dental evaluations, it can also be helpful to bring that information with you. If you want to learn more about the records that may be useful, see bringing prior x-rays and imaging for TMJ evaluation.
When You Arrive
Our office is located in Irvine, and there is a parking garage right outside the building. You can take the elevator to the second floor, or if you park on the second floor, you can enter directly from there.
When you arrive, you will be greeted by a member of our front desk team and then escorted to a treatment room by a clinical assistant.
At that point, we begin by reviewing your history in more detail. This includes your symptoms, when they started, how they have changed, and what providers or treatments you may have already seen. We also review your current dentist and doctors so we have a better overall picture of your care.
A Detailed Review of Your Symptoms
TMJ problems are not always limited to one type of discomfort. Some people come in with jaw pain. Others are more concerned about clicking, tension, headaches, ear symptoms, or trouble opening comfortably.
That is why the first visit includes careful follow-up questions. Dr. Kim will review your history with you directly to better understand your concerns, how your symptoms affect your daily life, and what patterns may be contributing to the problem.
This part of the appointment matters. TMJ symptoms can overlap with other issues, and a good treatment plan starts with a thorough understanding of what you are actually experiencing.
If you are still unsure whether your symptoms sound TMJ-related, you may also want to review TMJ symptoms: signs your jaw pain may be TMJ or TMJ symptom review: a comprehensive look at jaw pain and dysfunction.

Your Clinical TMJ Examination
After the history review, Dr. Kim will perform a clinical exam of your temporomandibular joint.
This examination is meant to evaluate how your jaw is functioning and where the problem may be coming from. Depending on your symptoms, this may include assessing your jaw movement, the joint itself, and the surrounding structures involved in jaw function.
This is one of the most important parts of the visit because it helps connect your symptoms to actual findings rather than guesswork.
If you want a more complete overview of this part of care, you can read TMJ clinical exam: how we evaluate jaw joints, muscles, and bite.
Imaging and Digital Records
Not every patient needs the same imaging, but if indicated, Dr. Kim may recommend a cone beam CT to better visualize and evaluate your jaw joint.
If CBCT imaging is taken, the images are then sent to a board-certified radiologist for a report specific to the TMJ. This helps provide a higher level of detail when evaluating the joint.
In many cases, the clinical assistant will also complete a digital scan of your teeth for additional record taking. These digital records can be useful for diagnosis and for planning treatment when needed.
This combination of clinical examination, imaging when indicated, and digital scanning helps us build a more complete picture of your condition.
You can also learn more about these records on CBCT imaging for TMJ and digital scanning for TMJ records.
What Dr. Kim Explains During the Visit
Once the exam and records are complete, Dr. Kim will explain your jaw joint, the likely reason for your symptoms, and your diagnosis.
This part of the appointment is meant to give you clarity. Many patients come in frustrated because they have been told different things or have never had a clear explanation for why their symptoms are happening. Our goal is to help you understand the problem in straightforward terms.
Dr. Kim will also review treatment options and offer care based on your diagnosis. That recommendation is personalized. Some patients may be candidates for a program involving intraoral orthotics. Others may be appropriate for regenerative medicine with platelet-rich fibrin therapy. In some cases, trigger point injections, guided behavioral therapy, jaw stretching exercises, Botox for persistent clenching or bruxism, or other supportive therapies may be considered as part of care.
What Happens After the First Visit
At the end of the appointment, you may decide to move forward with treatment, or you may take time to consider your options.
If you choose to begin care, the next appointment is typically scheduled to start treatment, such as orthotics or PRF, depending on your diagnosis and treatment plan.
That means your first visit is not just a consultation for the sake of a consultation. It is the step where we gather the information needed to build a thoughtful plan for your care.
In many cases, yes. The purpose of the first visit is to review your history, perform a clinical exam, gather records as needed, and explain the reason for your symptoms and diagnosis.
Not every patient needs the same imaging. If indicated, Dr. Kim may recommend a cone beam CT to better evaluate the jaw joint.
Typically, treatment is scheduled for a follow-up visit after the initial evaluation and treatment discussion.
