Combining Regenerative Treatment and Orthotic Support for Better Jaw Function
If you have been dealing with ongoing jaw pain, joint irritation, or TMJ symptoms that do not seem to fully improve, treatment may need to address more than one part of the problem. In some cases, that means combining regenerative treatment with orthotic splint therapy as part of a personalized TMJ care plan.
At John H. Kim, DDS in Irvine, we provide focused care for TMJ and jaw pain using a diagnostic, patient-specific approach. For some patients, PRF and orthotic splint therapy can work together to support healing, reduce strain on the jaw system, and improve comfort and function over time.

Why These Treatments Are Sometimes Combined
TMJ problems are not always just about the joint, and they are not always just about the muscles or bite. Many patients have a combination of joint irritation, jaw tension, and functional imbalance that keeps symptoms going.
That is where combining therapies may help.
Orthotic splint therapy is used to guide and support the jaw in a more stable way. PRF is used as a regenerative medicine option to help create optimal conditions for healing, pain reduction, and improved function. When both joint health and jaw function need attention, using these treatments together may be an appropriate part of care.
If you are still trying to understand the cause of your symptoms, our TMJ Diagnostics and Evaluation page explains how we assess jaw pain and joint problems in more detail.
What Orthotic Splint Therapy Adds
Orthotic splint therapy is not simply about placing a generic appliance over the teeth. In our office, it is part of a treatment program that uses intraoral orthotics to evaluate your response and determine the optimal fit and design based on how your jaw functions during treatment.
This matters because TMJ symptoms can be influenced by how the jaw is functioning day to day. When the bite system is unstable or the jaw is under excessive strain, symptoms may continue even when patients are trying to rest the area.
Orthotic treatment may be used to help reduce stress on the joint, improve jaw support, and give us useful information about how your symptoms respond over time.

PRF, or Platelet Rich Fibrin, is part of our regenerative medicine approach for TMJ care. It is used to provide your body optimal conditions to reduce pain, improve function, regenerate, and heal.

What PRF May Contribute to Treatment
For patients with TMJ joint irritation or symptoms that suggest the joint itself needs more direct support, PRF may be considered as part of treatment. In those situations, PRF is not replacing orthotic therapy. It may be used alongside it.
That combination can be useful when one part of treatment is intended to support the healing environment while the other helps improve how the jaw is functioning during everyday use.

When a Combined Approach May Make Sense
Some patients may be candidates for both PRF and orthotic splint therapy when their symptoms point to a more layered TMJ problem. That may include patients with jaw joint pain, clicking or limited function, muscle tension, or symptoms that have not responded fully to simpler treatment.
The key point is this: treatment should be based on diagnosis, not guesswork.
At our office, we do not assume every patient needs the same appliance or the same injection-based treatment. We evaluate your symptoms, history, jaw function, and imaging when indicated, then explain what appears to be causing the problem and which treatment options may make sense for your case.
If you have already been advised to start splint therapy or another TMJ treatment but want added clarity first, a TMJ Second Opinion may be the right next step.
How We Evaluate TMJ Before Recommending Treatment
Your first visit is designed to help us understand what is really going on.
The process begins with a discovery call and intake review, followed by a discussion of your symptoms and treatment philosophy. During the appointment, Dr. Kim reviews your concerns, performs a clinical exam of the temporomandibular joint, and may recommend cone beam CT imaging if it is indicated to better visualize the jaw joint. These images are sent to a board-certified radiologist for a report. Digital scans are also typically taken as part of the records process.
After the evaluation, Dr. Kim explains your jaw joint condition, the likely reason for your symptoms, your diagnosis, and the treatment options available. If PRF, orthotic therapy, or a combination of both appears appropriate, we explain why before any treatment begins.
You can also review TMJ Consultation if you want to know more about what your first visit involves.
Personalized TMJ Care Instead of One-Size-Fits-All Treatment
TMJ symptoms can be frustrating because they often involve more than one issue at a time. Some patients need support for jaw function. Others may need treatment aimed at improving conditions within the joint. Some need both.
That is why combining PRF with orthotic splint therapy can be helpful in the right case. It gives us a way to address healing and function together rather than focusing on only one side of the problem.
At John H. Kim, DDS, our practice is limited to orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine, with priority services focused on TMJ, jaw pain, sleep apnea, and related concerns. We provide personalized treatment recommendations based on your diagnosis and your response to care.
If you are dealing with persistent jaw pain, tension, clicking, or reduced opening, schedule a consultation and find out whether PRF, orthotic splint therapy, or a combined treatment plan may be appropriate for you.
No. PRF is part of regenerative medicine and is used in our office to help provide optimal conditions for pain reduction, improved function, regeneration, and healing.
Not necessarily. Our orthotic treatment program is designed to evaluate your response and determine the best fit and design of the appliance based on function during treatment.
No. Treatment depends on your diagnosis. Some patients may be good candidates for one treatment, while others may benefit from combining therapies.
We use your symptom history, clinical exam, digital records, and imaging when indicated to determine the likely cause of your TMJ symptoms and recommend treatment accordingly.
